Product Review: 2016 45NRTH Wölvhammer Winter Cycling Boot

45NRTH introduced its newly redesigned Wölvhammer Winter cycling boot for 2016 late last Fall and the changes they made were a huge improvement on previous models.  Anyone who had a pair of these older models knew the problems with them such as sticky zippers and difficulty getting them on and off due to their double layer boot design.  Gone are all of those problems with this new single layer boot construction.  The outside of the boot now has a full grain leather and Ballistic Nylon Cordura shell for warmth and durability giving it the look and styling of a traditional mountaineering boot.

One of the first things I noticed is the improved Power Strap at the top of the boot, gone is the restrictive D-ring of the older style.  This will make putting them on easier and allow adjustments to be made while wearing gloves.  The lace-up design with gusseted tongue makes it easy to get the right amount of comfort when putting them on and it keeps the snow and slush out while keeping the warmth in.  The lacing has a Velcro tab on the end that can be tucked underneath the Power Strap so it is out of the way and secure.

With this new gusseted tongue, getting into them is easy.  It's just like putting on a traditional Winter boot.  This is especially handy when wearing thicker wool socks for colder temperatures.

The deep lug pattern Vibram sole provides plenty of traction for those times when you have to hike-a-bike or put a foot down to keep yourself upright.  This new model is two-bolt SPD compatible only but comes with a cleat plug giving it the versatility to be used with flat pedals too.

Where I found these boots really excelled for warmth was in the late Fall and early Winter when temperatures were in the twenties and thirties.  I was able to wear a thin wool sock and be warm and comfortable for hours out on my fatbike.  The wicking properties of the wool socks and the lining of the Wölvhammers kept my feet dry even when I became a little overheated.

My toes tend to get cold easily so when temperatures dipped into the teens and below I would use chemical toe warmers and thicker wool socks to extend the length of my rides.  The larger toe box on the new Wölvhammers still left me with plenty of wiggle room to keep blood circulating properly, even when wearing the thicker socks and toe warmers.

For really cold temperatures I would pair them with the 45NRTH Bergraven Gaiters to add an extra layer of insulation over the boot and keep the snow out for those first tracks and bushwhacking rides in deeper snow.

During the Winter I will clip in (using Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3's) about 75% of the time.  The times I don't and use flat pinned pedals are during icy conditions, doing a little bushwhacking or on rare occasions like downhill (Fat Bike Gravity Fest).  The Vibram sole of the Wölvhammers really works well with flats providing plenty of grip on the pins of the pedals.

Wölvhammers  keep my feet dry during wet conditions or creek crossings where shoe covers with MTB shoes don't.  Because they are breathable and keep moisture out, I plan on using them through the Spring thaw on some of my cold weather gravel rides on the fatbike.

The real test for the Wölvhammers came back in mid January when temperatures got really cold here in the Twin Cities.  Some friends and I decided to go out early one Sunday morning for a creek/bushwhacking ride through the Minnesota River Bottoms.  At ride start the temperature was -14° F and after 2-3/4 hours it had warmed up to -6° F.  I had used chemical toe warmers and thick wool socks for this ride and by keeping my core temperature up with constant movement the Wölvhammers kept my feet warm but my toes were beginning to get a little cold near the end.

In conclusion, 45NRTH Wölvhammer boots are an excellent choice for both clipless and flat pedals in the Winter.  Their comfort rating is 0° F to 25° F and in these conditions they work quite well at keeping feet warm and dry.  Everyone is different so sock choice and chemical warmers will definitely help those who's feet get cold easily.  These boots are very comfortable and don't seem bulky like other non-cycling specific boots.  The new design is a huge improvement over the older models and has become much more user friendly.  For those that race ultras or ride many miles in extreme temperatures the Wölvhammer may not keep your feet warm during these extended periods of a sub-zero climate.  For this reason 45NRTH spent several years developing the ultimate extreme cold weather boot, the Wølfgar with its comfort rating of -25° F to 10° F.  But for most of us recreational and enthusiast riders, the Wölvhammer does a fine job.

45NRTH Wölvhammer boots are now available in Mens extra wide 38–50 (no size 49), full sizes only at Penn Cycle and other fine bike shops for $325.

More Ski Resorts Offering Access to Fatbikes

As more cyclists are extending their riding season with fatbikes, ski resorts are taking notice of the sport.  Ski resort access for fatbikes first started a couple of years ago at the Gran Targhee Resort in Alta, Wyoming.  Gran Targhee Resort was the first in the nation "to embrace and endorse winter fat bikes on the Nordic trail system".  As ski resorts see this opportunity for extra revenue during the Winter months, many have opened up their Nordic trails to fatbikes.  But the most exciting trend beginning to happen now is fatbike downhill with lift access.

Last March the Mankato Area Mountain Bikers in coordination with Nicollet Bike Shop and Mount Kato held the first ever Nicollet Bike Fat Bike Gravity Fest.  With over 100 fatbikers in attendance that day, the event was a huge success and promises to be even bigger and better than last year with an exclusive chair lift for bikers only, more distance and different trailsFat Bike Gravity Fest 2016 takes place on Sunday, March 6th from 12:00 to 4:00pm with open practice/ride time on the fatbike specific trails and hills from 12pm to 3:30pm and race against the clock in the downhill time trial (Super D format) that starts at 3:30pm.  This is your once-a-year chance to ride Mount Kato so don't miss it.  For more information see my post Fat Bike Gravity Fest Returns To Mount Kato.

  • Terrain open will vary during the season based upon snow pack, conditions, etc.  Visit out snow report for updates.
  • Planned open trails are Timber Cruiser, Juggler Joe as well as Mountain Bike trails of Candy Land, Happy Camper & Lower Calculated Risk

Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Colorado just last week announced that it "will allow winter biking before and after ski resort operating hours".  This would allow fatbikers access to the mountain with a similar policy already in place for uphill skiers.  With more ski resorts beginning to allow access to fatbikers, I hope the resorts here in Minnesota will see the value in adopting their own policy allowing fatbikes.  Two Minnesota ski resorts have already granted access to fatbikes on their Nordic trails.

Two Winters ago Giants Ridge in Biwabik was one of the first in Minnesota to allow fatbikers to ride on their groomed Nordic trails.  This Winter they are opening 60km of Nordic trail access to fatbikes.  A proper trail day pass or season pass is required.  Fatbike rentals are also available at the rental shop.

Image Credit: Detroit Mountain Rec. Area
Detroit Mountain Recreation Area in Detroit Lakes will have bike trails open to snowshoeing/fatbiking with "Select Groomed Ski Trails may be available for Fat Biking depending upon Daily Snow Conditions."   Fatbike rentals are available at the Detroit Mountain Lodge.

New this year as part of the Detroit Lakes Polar Fest, Detroit Mountain will be hosting the SNOway But Round Fat Bike Race on February 7th.  "The SNOway But Round Fat Bike Race is Detroit Mountain's first winter fat bake race. A specially designed 5 mile course will wind it's way around the base area and through our Nordic ski and XC flow trails. Choose from one or two laps."

Fatbikes are not a fad that is going away and as more ski resorts offer access to them it is my hope that other resorts will also join in.  Please be sure to always follow IMBA's Fat Bike Best Practices to ensure a good relationship with the landowners granting access as these practices will help open more riding opportunities in the future.

Twin Cities Area Winter Fatbike Trail Opportunities

Winter fatbiking is big in Minnesota and the Twin Cities have quite a few trail systems that are groomed or snowshoe stomped by volunteers to pack the trails for riding.  With the ever increasing popularity of  these wide low pressure tire bikes, new trail riding opportunities have popped up.  I have compiled a list of these trails open to winter mountain biking with links to maps, trail information, trail conditions and Facebook/Twitter pages if available.  Trails that have Facebook or Twitter pages will post trail openings and conditions or closures due to warm weather.

Low tire pressure, usually 10 psi or lower and tires 3.8 inches or wider are recommended for use on these trails in the Winter.  Skinny tires can be used when trails are firmly packed enough to not cause ruts or damage.

Fat Bike Gravity Fest Returns To Mount Kato-CANCELLED

Fat Bike Gravity Fest is coming to Mount Kato in Mankato on Sunday, March 6th.  This will be the second year of this event hosted by Nicollet Bike Shop and the Mankato Area Mountain Bikers (MAMB).  I had a chance to make it to last year's event and had the time of my life.  What could be better than riding fatbikes down ski slopes?

This year promises to be even bigger and better than last year with an exclusive chair lift for bikers only, more distance and different trails.

Come early for the open practice/ride time on the fatbike specific trails and hills from 12pm to 3:30pm and race against the clock in the downhill time trial (Super D format) that starts at 3:30pm.  After your done, watch your friends try to beat your time during their runs and either cheer them on or throw a few heckles their way.

$30 gets you an unlimited lift ticket for the open practice/ride time and downhill time trial race.  A portion of the proceeds go back to the Mankato Area Mountain Bikers for their trail building efforts.  Fatbikes with tires 3.8" or wider are required to attend.

This is definitely one fatbike event you're not going to want to miss.  It's a rare opportunity to ride on some great downhill runs and put your skills to the test.  Last year over 100 riders showed up and this year will bring even more out.  Hopefully the success of Fat Bike Gravity Fest will get other ski resorts thinking about hosting events like this one.

2015 Minnesota Global Fat Bike Day Events

Global Fat-Bike Day is a worldwide grassroots campaign that started three years ago to bring people from the fatbike community together to ride and make new friends.  In honor of Global Fat-Bike Day there are several rides scheduled here in Minnesota on December 5th that you may want to get in on as well as the Winter Bike Expo, 45NRTH Vinterhammer Superfat Crit and the first race of the Frozen Frolic Fatbike Race Series.  I have complied a list of them so you can get your "fat on" and ride with others of the "well-endowed tire crowd".

Global Fatbike Weekend is a new event this year taking place at the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails in Crosby, MN. This three day event kicks off on Friday night with an opening ceremony at 7pm at True North Basecamp followed by a bonfire lighting and snow dance.  Saturday brings a morning group ride at 10:30am followed by a lunch break and an afternoon group ride at 2:30pm, both starting at True North Basecamp.  At 6pm a beer hour and pizza party will be held at Cuyuna Lanes in Crosby with presenters JP LaMere, Aaron Hautala and the Cuyuna Lakes Yeti.  There will also be a DJ, fortune telling, a meat raffle and bowling.  Sunday closes up the weekend with a morning group ride at 10:30am followed by a lunch break and an afternoon group ride at 2:30pm, both again starting at True North Basecamp.

Lodging is available for this weekend event at the True North Basecamp cabins, the Cuyuna Bike House and at Country Inn Deerwood.  Book now as lodging is bound to fill up fast.  Get your tickets now for this great fundraiser for the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain bike trails.  Facebook Event Page

"Global Fat Bike Weekend is a fundraiser for the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails.  All profit goes toward building and maintaining the fatbike trails and all the funds raised will receive a $1 for $1 match.  Activities include fatbike demos, meat raffles, music, pizza party and happy hour and multiple fatbike rides.  Tickets start at $9.  More information about tickets purchasing is available at  www.fatbikeweekend.com."

The first race of the Frozen Frolic Fat Bike Race Series will be at Elm Creek Park Reserve in Champlin.  Registration begins at 10am and racing starts at 11am.  "Test your speed and skill in a time trial format racing a 10.5-mile loop through trees and snow. After, warm up at the trailhead for awards and door prizes. Divisions include men's, women's, and U-17."  Facebook Event Page

 Update:  ****CANCELLED**** PLEASE READ

Due to the warmer temperatures we will be experiencing this week and the freeze / thaw cycle that is occuring. We are cancelling this ride on the Minnesota River Bottoms. Please share this with anyone you know that is planning on this ride. By all means though, ride your bike this weekend. The weather is going to be very mild. The paved trails around the Twin Cities are waiting for your wheels to roll down them.

That is all,

Jonathan

Jonathan Bistodeau will be hosting his weekly Faturday ride with a special Faturday / Global Fatbike Day Minnesota River Bottoms that will start at 10am at the Russell A. Sorenson Landing (Lyndale Ave. lot) in Bloomington and follow the river bottoms trails to the Sibley House in Mendota and back with more mileage afterward for those that want to continue riding.

The Global Fatbike Day Ride-Northfield Edition starts at 1:30pm at Bridge Square in Northfield.  This no-drop "rain, snow, sun, or shade" ride will take participants on "some of our fair city's best fatbike terrain, like Sechler Park, the St. Olaf Natural Lands, maybe Odd Fellows or Lashbrook parks, and other points t.b.d."  After about 90 minutes of riding, it will conclude with refreshments at Downtown Bicycles.  Register online for free.

Charly Tri and Rochester Cycling will be hosting Global Fatbike Day-Rochester, MN at 5:30pm at Rochester Cycling.  "December 5th is global fatbike day which is just a reason to get a bunch of fatbikers together to ride, goof off, and have fun in the moment. Come ride with us and then hangout by the fire after with refreshments. The ride will be casual, have a few stops, and cater to those that want to have FUN on their fatbikes."  Check the Facebook Event Page for upcoming details.

The Iron Range Fat Bike Riders will be celebrating with the Hibbing Global Fat Bike Day in Hibbing, organized by Joe Sacco.  The start point is yet to be determined, but if I know Joe, you will not want to miss out on this one.  He knows and rides the Hibbing area year round and the route for this year's Global Fat Bike Day will not disappoint.

"Nothing too serious, low exertion, slow to moderate pace.
Our children will be joining in on the fun. Be prepared for plenty of stops.
We'll start from TBD.
The ride will consist of snowshoe groomed singletrack (snow dependant), and plenty of frozen water."

Nicollet Bike will be holding their 2nd annual Nicollet Bike Global Fat Bike Day Ride with the ride starting at the Nicollet Bike Shop in Mankato.  The ride starts at 1pm and details are coming soon.  Check the Facebook Event page at the link above for updates.

The Winter Bike Expo presented by Freewheel Bike returns for its fifth year December 5th & 6th to the Freewheel Midtown Bike Center.  The expo draws hearty cyclists from all over to see and demo all that manufacturers have to offer for winter commuters & fatbikers.  Admission is free and the fun kicks off at 9 am each day.  Winter biking seminars will be held throughout both days and there will be fatbike demos, raffles and beer!  For a schedule of events, visit the Winter Bike Expo link above.

Stick around after the Winter Bike Expo on Saturday night for the Superfat Crit, a criterium race for fatbikes set up on a feature laden course along the railroad trench of the Midtown Greenway.  Racers must have fat tires of at least 3.7" or wider and lights since the race will be conducted in the dark.  Racing starts at 6:00pm and entry requires you to brink "a pack of something to share with your new friends."  Freewheel Midtown Bike Center is located at 2834 10th Ave. S. in Minneapolis right on the Midtown Greenway.
